Happy New Year! With the calendar flip comes my favorite January tradition: going booze-free for 31 days.

This marks my 14th January as a legal-drinking adult in the USA, and my fifth time setting the intention to skip alcohol for the month. My longest sobriety streak lasted nearly four years, so who knows where this next chapter will lead? But let's start with these 31 days.

The Power of Keeping Promises to Yourself

Yesterday morning, a friend texted me about joining Dry January. By evening, I got the follow-up: "I suck at this. Had wine with dinner because my partner made bolognese."

Here's the thing—that glass of wine didn't hurt anyone. But what we're really after during Dry January isn't perfection. It's keeping a promise to yourself. The most important person in your life is YOU. Every choice you make, moment by moment, adds up to days, months, years, and ultimately your life. Only you know what choices will help you become your best self.

My Sobriety Story

My first experiment with sobriety began summer 2021. Post-pandemic, my mental health was in the garbage (relatable?), so I made some lifestyle changes to feel, look, and be my best. I discovered I love being sober—but I also sometimes love sharing margaritas with friends. And that's okay. Alcoholism is one reason to stop drinking, but it's far from the only one.

Want to drop pounds, especially around your waistline? Put down the booze and sugar. Dealing with inflammation symptoms like acne, puffiness, or stiff joints? Even a month off alcohol can make a noticeable difference.

5 Strategies for a Successful Dry January

1. Find Your Why Why are you taking this month off? Better physical health? Mental clarity? More energy for your kids? Weight loss? Listen to that voice inside your head—it knows your real reason.

2. Replace the Habit Our brains love habits because they shortcut decision-making. Breaking one is like changing lanes while driving. When I first stopped drinking, I replaced evening drinks with morning meditation. Then I started blogging—which became part of my livelihood four and a half years later. Maybe for you it's picking up a book, calling a friend at happy hour, or finally learning guitar.

3. Read "Quit Lit" Knowledge is power. My top recommendations:

Understanding the science behind alcohol and reading others' journeys provides motivation and completely reframes your relationship with drinking.

4. Move Your Body Daily As a fitness trainer, I'm biased, but daily movement—even just a walk or five minutes of stretching—becomes a powerful antidote during this transition. Exercise releases the same feel-good chemicals you might seek from alcohol, minus the hangover.

5. Curate Your Social Feed There's an incredibly supportive sober-curious corner of Instagram waiting for you. Change your algorithm, find your people, and let their journeys inspire yours.

P.S. Remember, progress over perfection. If you slip, tomorrow is a fresh start. The goal isn't to be perfect; it's to be intentional about your choices.
